The first mural, entitled 'THE LOCH' was funded by Forward Scotland from the aggregate tax levy. Their criteria was that the subject matter should include an aspect of quarrying.

Kildary Angling Club, who fish the loch, and Albyn Housing Society Ltd who kindly offered the facade of their building for the first mural were the two community groups involved in briefing the artist. The man-made Kildary Loch, (Lochanan) is a perfect example of a regenerated quarry.

The renowned artist, Ken White, was commisssioned to paint our first mural and met with both groups to discuss the brief and a design was agreed.

You will see on the right hand panel of the mural the workings of an old quarry. The left hand panel shows stonemasons using the quarried stone and the resulting building work. The centre panel depicts the Kildary Loch at Balnagown Quarry (some artistic licence has been used to include the castle at Balnagown - owned by Mr Al Fayed).

The opinion poll canvassed by the Ross-shire Journal showed a positive feedback with the editorial statement 'Invergordon's first mural - it's turned critics of the off the Wall scheme into supporters'.

Some local comments:

'I really didn't want these paintings in the beginning, but it's very well done. I had visions of it being a bit ugly, but I'm very pleased with it. I'd be happy to see more'.

'I thought it would make Invergordon look cheap. I really do like it now its finished. If they are as good as this I'd be happy to see more'.
